The Mentor Whos Already Closer Than You Think

The Mentor Whos Already Closer Than You ThinkThe Mentor Whos Already Closer Than You ThinkA professional mentor is someone whose advice you can trust and depend on who will lift you up, yet be honest with you when push comes to shove. A good mentor sees you through the best of times and the not-so-great and is often one of your biggest cheerleaders. If youre thinking that this sounds a lot like the role of a close friend, youre actually not too far off. A mentor can, in many ways, take on the role of a professional BFF- and who ever said a friend couldnt make a great career mentor? After all, your friends are there to celebrate when youve achieved a major milestone, to sympathize when youre going through a rough patch, and to give advice when youre struggling with a difficult decision. So its only natural that theyd be there for you in a professional sense as well. This is where the concept of a friendtor comes in. Its the idea that one of the best people you can have in your social a rsenal is an honest, trustworthy friend who can double as a professional mentor- someone you can turn to not only for fun times and memories, but also for advice and support in your career. Having friends who are as committed to career growth as you are can help you be better at your job and happier in your personal life. Heres why. They Get YouMost mentors only know you in a professional sense, even if they do have some knowledge of your personal life. Friends, however, have the luxury of context They may have known you for many years, know your family and social group, and have seen you confront previous challenges. This depth of familiarity can be key when it comes to giving you honest, helpful, trustworthy advice. For example, while a professional mentor may urge you to take a lucrative job in another city without a second thought, a close friend would know more about your priorities and values. Maybe youre extremely close with your sister who lives nearby and want to stay put no matter the price tag. A friendtor can acknowledge the difficulty a move would pose, and can help you work through the pros and cons of making a huge life change. (Related Is your mentor giving you bad advice?)They Widen Your CircleIf you work at a tech startup and your friendtor is an accountant at a big firm, youve hit the networking jackpot and expanded your connections threefold. While it can be great to talk to someone in your field (where mentors usually come from), the reality is that the wider your circle, the more likely you are to make diverse connections that can open your eyes to new contacts, business opportunities, and career paths.Friendtors are ForeverIf your friendtor happens to be one of your lifelong friends, he or she will be there as your life changes and priorities shift. Say, for instance, you get married and have a child. Your friend can help you adjust to your new role as a parent, while helping you find ways to keep your professional skills strong while you re on leave- or maybe even babysit when you need to stay late at work. Keep in mind, however, that not every friend is made for a friendtor role. Have you ever been out with a group of friends when the topic of work comes up? Perhaps youre asking for advice about how to cope with a difficult boss. Theres bound to be that one friend who says, Seriously? Why do you care so much? More drinks please Maybe you share a love for Crossfit and music festivals, but the truth is, youre just not on the same wavelength when it comes to professional growth. And thats fine- just dont expect to count on this person to understand when you have to skip happy hour to finish a big project or to give you advice when youre passed over for a promotion.Friendtors, on the other hand, are the people who will spend hours listening to a story about a big misunderstanding with your boss and why its bothering you. And vice versa, friendtors will come to you when theyve set up a big interview and need help role-p laying tricky questions. Friendtors can be your biggest career cheerleaders because they have the benefit of context about who you are (aside from a driven professional, of course). They can give advice tailored to you and your values, theyre accessible, and, best of all, they can double as your Saturday night partner in crime. Friendtors are so essential because, like an awesome blazer, they can seamlessly transition from work to play. So before you start looking for a new job or wondering where to go for career advice, evaluate the people in your life to identify friendtors, and start there.Photo of people talking courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to Fill out a W-4 Form for a New Job

How to Fill out a W-4 fasson for a New JobHow to Fill out a W-4 Form for a New JobIf you have landed your first job or are starting a new job you will need to fill out a W-4 form so that your employer can determine how much tax to withhold from your paycheck.ThePersonal Allowances Worksheet accompanying your W-4 form will be a valuable tool to help you determine the number of allowances you should note on the actual form. The Purpose of a W-4 Form The W-4 Form is completed by an employee so the employer can withhold the correct amount of federal income tax from your pay. When you are hired for a new job, you will be required to complete a W-4 Form to let your employer know how much tax to withhold. Prior to starting employment, you can fill out a PDF version of the W-4 formonlineand print it out.Its also a good idea to review withholding amounts on a regular basis to ensure the appropriate amount of tax is withheld. The W-4 form indicates to employers how much they need to deduct from your wages for federal income tax. This amount can be altered significantly depending on the number of withholding allowances a person decides to claim. The more claims that are taken, the less money will be taken out of your paycheck for federal taxes. These allowances can be changed at any time on account of additional jobs, marriage, pregnancy or adoption, divorce, etc. W-4 Allowances Allowances will be increased if you claim yourself, aspouse or children as dependents. Paying childcare expenses may also add to your number of allowances as will non-wage income like dividends or interest. If you itemize deductions on your taxes, you will want to complete the Deductions and Adjustments Worksheet to see if the level of your deductions indicates that you could decrease the amount that you withhold.TheIRS withholding calculatorwalks you through the process of evaluating your situation to determine appropriate levels of withholding. Before you begin filling out the W-4, it is worth sitting down with your spouse to determine whether or not you will be filing a joint tax return together for the current year. If so, review the first part of the W-4 carefully, as this section will determine how many personal allowances you will claim as a couple. It is best practice to determine the number of allowances in advance so that when you each fill out W-4 forms with your employers, you will only list the half the total allowances (your portion of the join return) when asked. Once the proper number of allowances and any additional amount of withholding is determined through the use of these tools, the process of completing your W-4 is quite straightforward. Boxes 1-4 contain your personal data, kasten 5 is where you enter the number of allowances, box 6 is the place to put any additional amount you would like withheld and box 7 is only for the rare person who doesnt need to withhold due to a very limited tax liability. Changing Your Deductions Even if you haven t just landed a new job, you can file a new W-4 with your employer if your life situation and/or deductions have changed or if you have found that you have too high a tax bill when you file or too large a refund. A critical ingredient in the process will be your philosophy regarding paying taxes, whether you would prefer to pay as you go throughout the year via withholding or at the end of the year. Some wage earners prefer to withhold more to lessen any tax surprises at the end of the year and in effect, force some savings if they are owed a refund. Others want to maximize their weekly/monthly paychecks and therefore increase their allowances and the amount withheld. After submitting your W-4 (through new employment or updated with new allowances), the information will go into effect quite fast. Employers are required to update employee information within 30 days of submitting the form, in time for that next pay period. If you forget to submit your W-4 in time for the end of the ye ar, the IRS will treat consider your income like that of a single person without any withholding allowances. Depending on your situation, this could be problematic, so be sure to submit the form as soon as possible while it is mucksmuschenstill fresh on your mind. Do This Instead of Comparing Yourself to Others - The Muse

Do This Instead of Comparing Yourself to Others - The MuseDo This Instead of Comparing Yourself to OthersWe compare ourselves to others all the time- shes so much cooler than I am he always knows how to impress our boss shes definitely going to get promoted before I do.And we also all know how bad it is to do this. It doesnt lead to any self-improvement, and it makes us feel worse about ourselves because we cant live up to all the people around us.Long story short This kind of internal dialogue isnt productive. Now, I cant stop you from having these thoughts- its natural to see our colleagues success and wish the same for ourselves. But, I can help you turn those insecurities into healthy, proactive actions. The next time you departure feeling jealous about others accomplishments, heres how to give yourself a confidence boost. 1. List Your AccomplishmentsSure, your co-worker ran an Ironman or your friend landed an awesome new gig. But what about you? I bet you havent just been sitting around waiting to get lucky.Whenever youre feeling down about what everyone else is up to, stop the self-deprecation and take responsibility for your own achievements by writing them down. It can be anything, and it can be short-term or long-term. Just start listing the things youre proudest of this day, week, year, lifetime. By putting them down on paper, youre making them real, tangible, noteworthy- and you cant retract them just because someone else did something bigger.Next, take a good, hard look at that list. Notice how long it is and how far youve come and give yourself a pat on the back. Then, notice whats missing from it, which leads me to my next point.2. Set GoalsThe beneficial thing about comparing yourself to others is that you can use it to push yourself to be better as well. You cant become someone else, but you can learn from his or her success and adopt some of these same habits or behaviors. So, take note of what strikes you about someone else, and then think of how you can get there, too. If this person is always prepared in meetings and seemingly able to offer great ideas on the fly, set aside 30 minutes on the day of the meeting to get yourself organized, read through any relevant emails or documents, and start brainstorming on the topic. If he or she is well-liked in the office, make it a goal to get coffee with one new person every day this week so you too can get to know more people (and show them how awesome you are). Of course, nobody got to where he or she is in a day, which is why its important to set realistic expectations for yourself and your abilities. You can look up to your CEO for all the work shes done, but obviously dont make your goal become a CEO by the end of the year. Instead, evaluate the steps youd have to take to maybe make that a reality- taking initiative at work, getting involved in speaking engagements, starting a side gig, and so on. More importantly, be aware of the traits you admire, but simply dont align with who you are. These are the things you have to just let go. For example, I look up to people who wake up to run every day, but I know thatll simply never be me (I get more done at night). 3. Ask QuestionsFinally, remember that even the coolest, smartest, wittiest, most successful people you wish you were like are also, well, people. And odds are good that theyd be flattered to help you get to their level. So, dont be afraid to compliment them, ask questions, and get a bit of insight into what makes them so awesome. Reach out to your hero on LinkedIn with a personalized message and see if he would be willing to discuss his career experience.Or, ask a colleague if she could give you feedback on your presentation, because shes always such a good public speaker. Or, grab lunch with a friend and learn about how he landed his new job. (Was spending more time with friends on your list of goals? Boom, two birds with one stone). Its normal to see your own flaws in other peoples strengths. The t hing is, you shouldnt just feel bad about yourself- you have the power, and the tools, to become that admirable person. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, take these three steps to geschirr all that hidden potential you didnt know you had. And for all you know, maybe all the stuff you have going for you is making someone else jealous as we speak. Photo of woman listening courtesy of Thomas Barwick/Getty Images.

Shape-Shifting 3D Structures

Shape-Shifting 3D Structures Shape-Shifting 3D Structures Shape-Shifting 3D StructuresResearchers have designed and built small, self-folding structures for years. But the shapes that they could design have always been limited by the straight-line hinges embedded into the material. Geometric solid shapes like cubes and pyramids were easy more complex, flowing shapes were impossible. Now, a team of engineers at North Carolina State University in Raleigh has developed a technique using black ink to make 2D plastic sheets curve into 3D structures, such as spheres, tubes, bowls, and even more complex shapes.Michael Dickey and Jan Genzer, professors of chemical and biomolecular engineering at NC State, published their paper in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal, Soft Matter. The project really started with students Russ Mailen and Amber Hubbard just trying different ink patterns in the lab. We thought it would be interesting to use thermoplastics since they are used for many application s in everyday life, Dickey said. We want to create materials that are initially flat and then transform into 3D objects in response to some stimuli, such as light, heat, or microwaves. The advance of the current work is to induce materials to fold sequentially using only light. Image North Carolina State UniversityTo make their curved shapes, the team used a conventional inkjet printer to print bold, black ink lines onto a pre-strained plastic sheet. The printed sheet welches then cut into a pattern and placed under a heat lamp. The black lines absorbed more energy from the light than the rest of the material, and the plastic heated and contracted at those points, creating a hinge around which the sheet can deform.Consider the challenge of wrapping a soccer ball with wrapping paper. It is impossible to do without crumpling the paper, Dickey said. The only way is with material that can deform. We are essentially using the ink to dictate where the sheet deforms in response to light, an d create curvature.By varying the width of the printed hinges, the researchers can adjust the length and speed of the folds. Dickey and Genzer were inspired by nature natural shapes rarely incorporate crisp folds. The team was also encouraged by watching children, who play with self-folding materials without any preconception. We realized the ink did not have to be confined to a line, but could be more complex, Dickey said. By using thermoplastics rather than softer materials (which some researchers have tested as foldable material), Dickeys team was able to develop strong, stiff objects. After the heat lamp is removed, the objects will still hold their shape, another advantage of thermoplastics over soft materials, which deform easily. That rigidity is essential for developing practical applications. The team is now fine-tuning a predictive computational model that can create patterns to print on to sheets to produce functional objects that have both gentle curves and sharp creases.W e want to control the deformierung to create more interesting shapes like spheres, Dickey said. Different Types of Work Schedules

Different Types of Work Schedules Different Types of Work Schedules A work schedule generally refers to the days per week and the hours per day that an employee is expected to be at their job. There are several different types of work schedules, which vary based on the organization and the position. Your schedule can also vary based on the time of year. For example, some jobs have work schedules that change, depending on the season. Make sure you know the work schedule for any job before accepting a position. This will help you avoid any surprises when you start work. Check the Work Schedule Before Accepting a Job The type of schedule required for a job is typically included in the job posting or explained during a job interview. However, if you’re not clear about the hours, check with the employer prior to accepting a job offer. Its important to know if the work schedule will fit with your lifestyle and other responsibilities, like family or school. Even if a job is listed as full-time or part-time, you might want to follow up with questions about what your weekly schedule would look like. For example, one job seeker accepted a salaried job where she expected to work 40 hours per week, only to find out that the expectation was for 50. On the flip side, another applicant accepted a part-time job that he expected to be 25-30 hours a week. The employer scheduled him for 8-10 hours, and even less some weeks. You might also double-check the days each week that you are expected to work. For example, some jobs require you to come in on weekends, while others are only Monday through Friday. Types of Work Schedules Full-Time Work Schedule: A full-time work schedule often requires a commitment of 37-40 hours per week. Because of the long hours, most jobs with full-time schedules are eligible for employee benefits. These benefits can include vacation and sick days, health insurance, and different retirement plan options. Full-time schedules vary from company to company, but most of the time, employees will work the same shift every week. The most common full-time work schedule is a variant of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, adding up to 40 hours per week. While most full-time work schedules are normally the same shift each day, in some cases (like retail), shifts can vary, but the number of hours will still add up to 35-40 per week. Full-time non-exempt workers generally receive overtime pay. This happens when the hours worked exceed the established 40-hour maximum. Overtime is paid at a minimum of base hourly pay plus a half of that base pay, also known as “time and a half.” This is typical for people who get paid hourly. Exempt employees are not generally eligible for overtime. Most exempt employees receive a salary instead of an hourly rate. Part-Time Work Schedule: A part-time work schedule is any schedule less than full-time employment. The benefit of this type of schedule is that it allows for greater flexibility to maintain other responsibilities outside of work. Part-time work often does not include benefits offered to full-time employees, and hours can be erratic and inconsistent from week to week. An example of a part-time work schedule could be Monday through Wednesday from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM and Saturday and Sunday 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Fixed Work Schedule: A fixed work schedule is a timetable that generally consists of the same number of hours and days worked per week. Fixed work schedules tend to stay consistent once the number of hours and the days have been agreed upon by both the employer and the worker. An example of a fixed schedule would be Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM or Thursday through Sunday from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Flexible Work Schedule: A flexible work schedule is less rigid than a fixed schedule. Employees and employers work together to determine the number of hours and days of the week the employee will work. Depending on the employer’s policy, employees may be expected to work a minimum number of hours or be at work at a certain daily block of time, but shifts can often be switched with other coworkers in order to satisfy the needs of the employer and the busy life of the employee. Flexible work schedules can vary infinitely, but an example might look like: Monday - 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, Tuesday - 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday - 2:00 PM to close. Rotating Shift Work Schedule: Rotating work schedules cycle employees through day, swing, and night shifts. This cycle helps to distribute different shifts between all employees so that no one is stuck with the less desirable hours every shift. This work schedule is not as common but can be seen in many careers like the military, construction work, roadwork jobs, power plants, and health care. These shifts can cycle weekly or quarterly, depending on the type of work required. For many employees, the transition between the different schedules can be tricky. Sleep and eating patterns change and the employee may see their family and friends less because of their rotating schedule. This type of timetable does have some benefits. Employees are able to spend more time with family and friends during their normal work hours, and may be able to run errands they normally would not be able to complete. Hours can cycle between day shifts (7:00 AM to 3:00 PM), swing shifts (1:00 PM to 9:00 PM), and weekend, night, or overnight shifts. Key Takeaways Ask About Your Work Schedule Before You Start a New Job: It’s important to know whether you’re working full- or part-time, for example, before you accept.Flexible or Fixed- Know Which Type of Schedule You Have: Some positions have the same hours each week, while others vary. You may even be able to work a varying schedule that leaves room for your other commitments.Certain Jobs May Require Rotating Shifts: If you work in construction, health care, or a few other industries, you may be asked to work different shifts depending on the organization’s needs.

Biochemist and Biophysicist Job Description

Biochemist and Biophysicist Job Description Biochemist and Biophysicist Job Description Biochemists and biophysicists examine the chemical and physical bases of biological processes. Biochemists and biophysicists may also carry out applied research, which means that their research objective is to solve existing problems that may negatively affect living systems. Biochemists usually focus on molecular-level operations such as cell development, how cell structure relates to function, how cells metabolize food and chemicals, and how toxins may adversely affect the biology of an organism or group of organisms. Biophysicists, whose work complements that of biochemists, usually study atomic-level processes and how evolution or biology is affected by the laws of physics. For example, NASA continues to explore how various types of organisms, including bacteria and people, adapt to conditions of near weightlessness or microgravity in space. Biochemist and Biophysicist Duties Responsibilities Duties and responsibilities of biochemists and biophysicists may require the ability to do the following work: Design and conduct experiments.Manage and review the work of research teams.Analyze and synthesize organic molecules such as proteins and DNA.Develop potential gene therapies.Research the chemical composition of drugs, enzymes, and various types of nutrients and their effect on living tissues.Write and publish papers and reports to describe research findings.Review the research papers, methods, and findings of other scientists.Attend conferences and present research findings and recommendations to other scientists. Write grant applications to obtain funding for future initiatives. Biochemists and biophysicists must obsessively adhere to the scientific method, think creatively but objectively, stay abreast of research in their field, and interact effectively with colleagues, potential sources of funding, subordinates, and the public when necessary. In addition, they must be comfortable using state-of-the-art technologies, such as lasers, fluorescent microscopes, computer modeling software, 3D printing, and CRISPR, to carry out research and analyze the results. Biochemist and Biophysicist Salary The most significant variables influencing biochemist and biophysicist compensation are industry and location. The highest-paying jobs are in management and scientific and technical consulting, followed by scientific research and development services, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and colleges, universities, and professional schools. The top-paying states for these jobs, in descending order, are New Jersey, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. A Ph.D. is needed to work in independent research and development. Most candidates who have just received their Ph.D. begin their careers in temporary postdoctoral research positions. Education: Education begins in high school by taking math, chemistry, and physics courses, in addition to biology, computer science, foreign languages, public speaking, and English composition. In college, major in biochemistry, biophysics, biology, chemistry, physics, or a similar area with additional emphasis in computer science and math, including calculus and statistics.Advanced degree: To enter a Ph.D. program, candidates may be required to take the Graduate Record Examination and submit an application package that typically includes transcripts and GPA, a statement of purpose, personal history statement, description of research experience and interests, at least three letters of recommendation, a resume or curriculum vitae, completed application form, and application fee. Doctoral students spend substantial time planning and executing research projects and taking advanced courses in their area of specialization. To finish the program, they write a dissertation that demonstrates  their ability to carry out independent, innovative research, and may be required to present a seminar discussing their findings.   Training: Although it isnt required, candidates will benefit from an internship, such as those offered by NASA, Abbott Labs, Cook Medical, and the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry. After being awarded a Ph.D., training will likely continue in a temporary postdoc research position under the supervision of experienced scientists in the field. During this phase of training, candidates publish their research findings to help them attain a permanent appointment.Certification and Licensing: Certification and licensing arent required for jobs in biochemistry or biophysics, but candidates can opt to become certified to demonstrate mastery of the core competencies in their field of study. For example, the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) offers a certification option to students attending ASBMB-certified schools. Youll need recommendations from professors when you apply to graduate programs. Take the time to get to know them, ask for part-time work in the department, assist with research projects, and participate in departmental activities such as seminars. Biochemist and Biophysicist Skills Competencies Youll need a variety of skills and attributes to be a successful biochemist or biophysicist: Communication and interpersonal skills: They present findings orally, write and publish papers and reports, persuade sources other than the federal government to fund research, write applications for grants, and work effectively with a team toward common objectives.Computer science and math skills: Biochemists and biophysicists regularly conduct complicated data analyses and use complex equations and formulas in their work.Critical-thinking skills: They draw conclusions from experimental results through logical reasoning and sound judgment shaped by years of experience and training. Objectivity: They must be objective about their research and go where the science leads rather than where they want it to go.Problem-solving and analytical skills: They use experimentation and analysis to figure out the set of possible solutions to a scientific problem, select the best solution or hypothesis, and test it.Tenacity: They are thorough, precise, and stick with a project or experiment regardless of the problems that crop up or the number of times they have to start over with a clean slate. Time-management skills:  They may often be on a deadline when researching a problem or writing a paper. They allocate their time wisely and efficiently juggle competing priorities without compromising the quality of their work. Job Outlook The occupations of biochemist and biophysicist enjoy O*NETs Bright Outlook designation. This means that based on Bureau of Labor Statistics projections, employment in these fields is expected to grow at least 11 percent during the decade 2016 to 2026, which is faster than the average forecast growth for all occupations. This growth rate is attributed to the predicted need for additional qualified personnel to conduct research and development into products and techniques that improve quality of life for people, including the rapidly increasing aging population, which is expected to precipitate demand for new pharmaceuticals and procedures to detect, reverse, and prevent disease. Biochemists and biophysicists are also expected to be in demand in areas such as disease detection, treatment, and prevention in animals; genetic research; green energy; efficient, clean food production; and the effects of pollution and climate change on biological systems. Work Environment Most biochemists and biophysicists work on interdisciplinary teams and divide their time between offices and laboratory environments where they may supervise other scientists, technicians, or interns; plan and carry out laboratory research; and record and analyze research results. Work Schedule Biochemists and biophysicists usually work full-time during regular working hours, although they may work overtime occasionally to complete time-sensitive experiments or meet other project deadlines. This email plugin wants you to stop saying sorry all the time

This email plugin wants you to stop saying 'sorry' all the time This email plugin wants you to stop saying 'sorry' all the time Just how sorry are you in your emails? To get what we want, we may pad our emailed requests with softening qualifiers like “So sorry!” and “Just,” even when we are not sorry at all. One Gmail plugin wants us to cut this behavior out and stop apologizing for everything we do at work.Created by Tami Reiss, Steve Brudz, Manish Kakwani, and Eric Tillberg of software consultancy group Def Method, the Just Not Sorry plugin seeks to “stop qualifying our message and diminishing our voice” by pointing out our use of “sorry” in emails, so that we edit ourselves from using them.Qualifiers like ‘just’ can weaken your pointOnce you download the Chrome extension, the plugin underlines anytime you write a problematic qualifier like “just,” “sorry,” “I think,” or “I’m no expert” in red, the same way a word would get underlined as an error if you misspelled it in spellcheck. If you hover over the offending qualifier, a popup will appear with warnings like “Using ‘sorry’ frequently undermines your gravitas and makes you appear unfit for leadership” or ” ‘Just’ demeans what you have to say.”Using qualifiers can make you appear weak, Reiss argues.“When someone uses one of these qualifiers, it minimizes others’ confidence in their ideas,” she wrote in a Medium post. “Qualifiers hint to the reader that you don’t have faith in what you’re saying. The last thing you need is to seem unsure of yourself.”Just Not Sorry is aimed at women in particular. In her Medium post, Reiss frames the plugin as a service to embolden entrepreneurial women. One study found that women have a lower threshold than men for what kind of offense requires an apology, which may explain why women are perceived to be frequent apologizers. If you prone to peppering your speech with compulsive sorries, then a tool like Just Not Sorry can make you more aware of how you speak. But not everyone is convinced about the plugin’s service as a social good. In response to Just Not Sorry, linguist  Debbie Cameron wants us to understand that language is contextual, and not every “just” should be seen as demeaning.“Words like ‘just’ have a range of functions: you can’t just [sic] assert that they are ‘demeaning’ in every context. (As I also pointed out, Nike didn’t choose ‘Just Do It’ as a slogan because they thought it sounded pleasingly weak and powerless),” she wrote in a blog post  critiquing the plugin. “Even when ‘just’ is being used as a hedge (i.e., to make a pointless forceful or more tentative), the commonest reason for that is simply to be polite; and politeness is more strategic than demeaning.”There is not just one way to word a work email, in other words. In defense of qualifiers like “sorry” and “like,” writer Ann Friedman noted that language is “often about building relationships,” adding that “to assume that our verbal tics are always negative is to assume that the goal of al l speech is the same.  Which of course is patently ridiculous.”

How to Navigate Through Politics in the Workplace

How to Navigate Through Politics in the Workplace How to Navigate Through Politics in the Workplace According to a 2012 Robert Half study,  56 percent of employees in the United States believe it is necessary to engage in office politics in order to get ahead. Author and career coach Julie Jansen explains that today’s diverse workplaces are filled with individuals with differing values, goals, experiences and personalities. Office politics are a natural occurrence. Jansen says that office politics are common because, “some employees have more power and authority than other  Ã¢€¦ getting promoted or gaining visibility with senior management is important to many employees; and staff often have to compete for limited resources.” Does your office break room or kitchen mirror a high school cafeteria complete with lunch table cliques? If you’re intimidated by the political jostling of the elite “Plastics” of the board room or unsure how to approach the “Band Geeks” or “Jocks,” here are a few tips from Simply Hired employees to help navigate the treacherous  waters of office politics: 1.  Be confident Remember as a child how teachers and parents comforted you after a bully’s attack, telling you that the bully was only picking on you out of his or her own insecurity? Well office politics operate in much the same way. If you’re experiencing negative behavior at the hands of coworkers, take a deep breath and give yourself a pep talk in the mirror. Having and displaying confidence in yourself and your work will help make you unflappable in the winds of office politics. 2.  Stay self-aware Imagine this scenario: two of your colleagues are jostling for the same promotion. One of them is your close friend while the other is someone you haven’t worked closely with. Throughout their interviewing process your good friend keeps you up-to-date and informed. You exchange words of advice and a bit of harmless gossip back and forth about the other candidate. Stop. Did you just rationalize “harmless” gossip? In moments like this where friendship and work life collide it’s important to remember that professionalism must come first. Don’t contribute to the struggles of day-to-day work life by becoming a negative force in the office. Try your best to provide positive feedback and support for your friend while keeping yourself out of any mudslinging. 3.  R-E-S-P-E-C-T When you were a kid and you had a disagreement with friends in elementary school, oftentimes your parents counseled you saying,  Ã¢€œYou’re not going to like everyone in your life, but it’s your job to learn how to coexist.” This  simple message can be applied to most stressful or uncomfortable workplace situations. While you may not always get along with your coworkers, and in some cases may rather dislike certain team members, it is important to treat each with respect. 4.  Find alignment Often negativity arises in the workplace when shifting priorities conflict with one another, causing team members to jostle one another for budget, time or attention. The competitive tendency is natural in business, but it should be approached systematically. Take the initiative to seek guidance on priorities when discord becomes a distraction. Sometimes this means having a quick check-in with management or with the other project owner. No need to squabble when you can work cohesively. 5.  Escalate when necessary It’s always important to approach these matters calmly, pleasantly and diplomatically. If you are feeling bullied or harassed in any way do not suffer in silence. Bring this to the attention of your manager or human resources. While many of us may enjoy watching high school comedies or reminiscing about our “glory” days, few people actually want to live that day-to-day cliquey life any longer. Take care to act kindly and respectfully and you’ll be doing your part to make your work environment comfortable for everyone.

Study Depression and anxiety may be as bad for you as smoking

Study Depression and anxiety may be as bad for you as smoking Study Depression and anxiety may be as bad for you as smoking We’ve known for a while now that depression and anxiety are serious mental illnesses that can prove debilitating to those who experience them. But a new study shows just how much of a threat mental health issues pose to our health. The study suggests that health effects of anxiety and depression can be as negative as other major risk factors such as smoking or obesity.   Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, combed through data about more than 15,000 retirees and found that people with depression or anxiety faced far greater odds of having a heart condition, stroke, high blood pressure and arthritis. The results were similar to those for individuals who were obese or smoked, though people with depression or anxiety were at an even greater risk of arthritis than those with other risk factors.“Anxiety and depression symptoms are strongly linked to poor physical health, yet these conditions continue to receive limited attention in primary care settings, compared to smoking and obesity,” first author  Andrea Niles  said in a press release. There was a major exception to the trend: Researchers found that depression and anxiety did not lead to a higher risk of cancer. Even though cancer survivors often feel their stress levels and overall mental health contribute to their diagnosis, hard data from this and other studies indicate that is not the case.Still, there are enough major diseases linked to depression and anxiety that the study’s authors argue it’s time for doctors to focus more on mental health as a major risk factor. And for those of us who aren’t in the medical profession, these new findings serve as a good reminder to prioritize our emotional and psychological well-being. Our life may depend on it.

With the Worlds Biggest Resume in Hand, He Hunts for a Job in the Street

With the World’s Biggest Resume in Hand, He Hunts for a Job in the Street With the World’s Biggest Resume in Hand, He Hunts for a Job in the Street This young man’s resume is “YUUUGE.” In fact, it’s one of the biggest resumes we’ve ever seen. Also,  it fits on a single page, which is a good practice that makes us happy every single time. So how did this huge resume come to be? And what is there to be learned from it? Adil Aslam has just graduated from the University of Melbourne where he received a fine education. As a young, fresh-out-of-college professional, he was eager to finally turn  his dreams into reality. Yet, even though he tried to apply for many jobs, he only received automated responses. This is when somebody must have told him: “Go big or go home, Adil.” So he did. When writing their resumes, most people tend to inflate their experience and accomplishments. Yet, Adil Aslam didn’t want to have anything to do with empty exaggerations. Instead, he inflated his resume in physical size. He went big. Which is why he didn’t have to go home but could take his resume to the Melbourne central business district instead. Now, it’s really hard not to notice a guy carrying around a huge resume. It’s just not something you see all the time. Even if he does it somewhat casually, simply standing on a corner of a busy street. Photo by Cameron Schwab Adil got noticed by Cameron Schwab, a renown leadership coach, who offered him a free coaching session. They chatted a bit and Adil made a great impression. Cameron described him as a bright young guy who has plenty of initiative and gumption, who listened well and responded with clarity and insight. Then he  shared Adil’s story on LinkedIn and his resume is already getting some attention. What can you  learn from Adil’s approach? If you can’t get your resume through, try different channels. When Adil saw he wasn’t getting any results by filing up online applications, he wasn’t afraid to take his resume to the streets. Also, always try to circumvent applicant tracking systems that are frequently used by recruiters. It’s where good applications go to die. Dont be afraid to experiment with the looks of your resume. From the recruiters’ perspective, most candidates are grey, faceless people. Make sure there’s something you will be remembered for. Make new friends and never refuse a helping hand. Not only did Adil accept Cameron’s advice, he turned him into an ally in his job search. Network or, even better, make new friends whenever you can. Well be following Adils story but if you know of a job that might suit well to  a resourceful marketer like himself, do contact him on LinkedIn! Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!
